Child Welfare Practicum Coordinator

The School of Social Work, within the College of Education and Human Development, is hiring a Child Welfare Practicum Coordinator.

Position Overview:
The Master of Social Work (MSW) Practicum Coordinator teaches, guides, monitors, and supports students, Practicum Instructors (social workers practicing at host agencies who supervise MSW interns), and the MSW program in the practicum component of the MSW program. Practicum comprises the largest portion of the MSW education and is identified by our accrediting body as the “signature pedagogy” of social work education. The Child Welfare Practicum Coordinator has the unique position of working with both the Center for Advanced Studies in Child Welfare (CASCW) and the School of Social Work’s Practicum program. It is a collaborative position with a specialty in public/Tribal child welfare.

The Child Welfare Practicum Coordinator, through enacting the essential functions listed below, guides child welfare students and Practicum Instructors through the practicum portion of their education and assures that students are gaining the competencies they require to enter practice as MSW-level social workers upon graduation. Additionally, the Practicum Coordinator works closely within the MSW program and with other practicum education coordinators to continually improve and enhance the practicum component of the MSW program.

The Child Welfare Practicum Coordinator coordinates 30-40 Title IV-E Child Welfare Fellows within public/Tribal child welfare-related practicum placements. The Child Welfare Practicum Coordinator teaches up to four practicum seminars annually. Beyond direct work with child welfare students in the classroom and with their community-based practicum agencies and staff, the Child Welfare Practicum Coordinator works closely with CASCW staff to deliver professional education experiences throughout the continuum of learning within the students’ MSW program. This can include child welfare student recruitment, selection, orientation, experiential learning, specialized training and development opportunities, and postgraduate support.

Curriculum Subject Matter Expert (SME)

The School of Social Work, within the College of Education and Human Development, is hiring a Curriculum Subject Matter Expert (SME).

Position Overview:
The Curriculum Subject Matter Expert (SME) position (Temp/Casual, 0001) is a University employee positioned in the Center for Advanced Studies in Child Welfare (CASCW) at the School of Social Work. CASCW has joined the Department of Children, Youth, Families (DCYF) in a joint project to co-create and operate the Minnesota Child Welfare Training Academy (MNCWTA). This position actively supports and advances the University’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

The Curriculum Subject Matter Expert (SME) supports the development of curriculum with staff curriculum developers at the MNCWTA while providing knowledge and expertise within training content. This includes professional and personal know edge related to child welfare practice. We rely on the SME to inform, share, and participate in various stages of the curriculum development process across course development.

Job Responsibilities:

Collaborates with curriculum development team on the proposed scope and sequence of the content
within the training section and how the section fits within the topic and overall course
Reviews and commits to deliverables that support project timelines
The ability to Identify and explain how contributions to curriculum are aligned with the Minnesota
Child Welfare Practice Competencies, and associated learning objectives.
Provides perspectives, ideas and suggestions to the curriculum development team on topics including
but not limited to: training scripts, activities, self-paced learning content, and application-based
scenarios.
Utilizes job aids, resources, and other materials to support contributions to curriculum.
In some cases, provides support through development of video, scenario and story production by
sharing knowledge and expertise
Has availability for consultation at various times during the design and development phase beyond the
formal meeting structure.
Attends the Kick-off Meeting, The Mid-point check-in during the Design phase, the Curriculum Review
meeting near the end of Development, and any other meetings upon request.

Child Welfare and the Law Community Trainer

The School of Social Work, within the College of Education and Human Development, is hiring a Child Welfare and the Law Community Trainer.

Position Overview:
The Community Trainer position (Temp/Casual, 0001) is a University employee positioned in the Center for Advanced Studies in Child Welfare (CASCW) at the School of Social Work. CASCW has joined the Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) in a joint project to co-create and operate the Minnesota Child Welfare Training Academy (MNCWTA). The Community Trainer serves as a critical member of the integrated teams of DHS and the University. This position is responsible for using the MNCWTA curriculum to train child protection workers in Minnesota to ensure a competent workforce for the children and families in the state.

This non-benefits eligible position will work a variety of hours (depending on the scheduling and trainer availability) over the course of the year and will fill out timesheets for the hours worked. Typically, training schedules are set six months in advance. As a part of New Worker Foundations training, as mandated for all new hires to county child protection agencies, MNCWTA also provides training for workers at all levels of experience to further their knowledge and skill in topics of particular relevance to their practice. One of these particularly relevant topics is Child Welfare and the Law. The topic is a module within our New Worker training and will also be a Specialty Course.

Required qualifications:

Must possess a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school
Has one or more years of experience with cases pertaining to child welfare and/or
child protection matters
Established commitment to diversity and cross-cultural communication
Ability to facilitate this course and navigate challenging conversations related to
assessment policy and difficult situations
