SSW Faculty Contribute to Landmark Book

Announcing a landmark publication on social work and white supremacy.

"Social Work, White Supremacy, and Racial Justice Reckoning With Our History, Interrogating our Present, Reimagining our Future," emerged from a four-part national virtual symposium brought on by the many violent race-based tragedies of the preceding years.

Social Work academics — especially those of color — questioned the historic and contemporary role of social work in maintaining and challenging systemic racism in the profession.

Our director, Dr. Joan Blakey, has authored two of the book's chapters: Chapter 8: From Denial to Disproportionality: History of White Supremacy, Structural Racism, and the Child Welfare System (with Kristen L. Selleck, Ashley M. Toland), and Chapter 14: The Black Woman's Tax (with Rebecca Chaisoon, Rae Stevenson, Marva L. Lewis)

Our faculty member, Dr. Jessica Toft, is author of one chapter of the book: Chapter 10: Mothers Who Receive Temporary Assistance for Needy Families: A Citizenship Accounting

The book is out now, through Oxford University Press.
